The purpose of this document is to offer guidance to the Masters and operators of vessels undertaking side-by-side ship to ship (STS) transfer, or lightering, of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
This guidance is intended to be suitable for all vessels covered under the scope of this document. When following this guidance, due consideration should be also given to the specific procedures contained within a ship operator’s safety management system (SMS) and any other relevant references.
The titles and format of this document are aligned with the OCIMF/ICS publication ‘Ship to Ship Transfer Guide
(Petroleum) 4th Edition’, which should be referenced for additional information.
These guidelines directly address the side-by-side STS transfer operations of LNG between commercially trading LNG carriers at anchor, alongside a shore jetty or while underway. The guidance applies to seagoing ships and may also be useful for reference when establishing rules and procedures for transfer operations between seagoing ships and LNG regasification vessels (LNGRV) or LNG floating storage and offloading vessels (FSOs) in inshore waters.
